The Federal Government are reviewing all of the OH&S laws in each state and want to make them consistent across the nation.

The Rudd Government has made a commitment before the 2007 election that Labor would uphold existing safety standards.

Business is seeking consistent OH&S laws across the country. This should not lead to second rate safety laws and lower safety standards.

Our safety standards are at risk: we stand to lose essential inspection and enforcement powers.

We have to fight back because we cannot afford to let this happen.

Dear Minister Gillard and Minister Tripodi, In 2007 we voted out the Howard Government because they took away our workplace rights and conditions. Labor gave a clear commitment to voters that they would “uphold existing safety standards”. The Productivity Commission stated that new laws should “adopt the best provisions from current OHS statutes (ie a ‘race to the top’)”. The Government is currently reviewing our work safety laws and it appears that our current OH&S standards in NSW are at risk. Elected workplace representatives and our unions stand to lose inspection and enforcement powers. This will have a direct impact on workplace injury and fatality rates. We are calling on our Federal and State Governments to keep their promise to keep its promise to the Australian people and put in place the best workplace safety standards for all.
